- Do you have any dreams?
- Have you ever slept until late just to hang around a little longer in your favourite morning dream?
- Are your dreams aligned with your goals?
- Do you have any goals at all?
- What are goals?
- Are they same as your dreams, or is there any difference?
Okay. That’s it. No more questions for you. I promise.
Why begin with questions? As questions have the power to awaken us. Throw us back to ourselves—take a nose dive right into our nature.
Everyone talks about goals. We keep hearing this word often — but have you understood what it means?
Everyone has dreams but only few have goals. Some of those have an action plan worked out. And, from this reduced lot only a couple make it—those who stick to it—those who persevere and not give up. As the personal success coach Brian Tracy says, “One of the greatest of all success principles is for you to think about your goals all the time – Morning, Noon, and Night.”
Let us now look at a simple seven step proven and powerful process, outlined by Brian Tracy himself, to set and achieve any kinds of goals. Let’s dive right into it step-by-step:
Step One: Decide Exactly what you want. Be specific.
In this first step, we are asked to decide first. If we don’t know, clear and outright, what we want, then there is very little chance of achieving it. So, decide and then decide again — your goals — clearly and specifically.
Step Two: Write it down.
Writing has power. By writing down our goals we infuse them with power. Putting pen on paper, we are summoning our sleeping energies to start working on them. We write and the universe reads it.
Step Three: Set a Timeline.
By giving a definite timeline to our goals we are awakening them. Without the clear date, a goal is only but a dream — like a leaf flying in the air, with no start and no end.
Step Four: Make a List.
Once we have decided upon the goals, written them down and attached a timeline to them, it’s time to create a list of all the little things that should be done in order to achieve them. Pick up the most important goal and then write down each and every step, subset — that you feel, pushes you closer to this end goal. Lists have amazing power and they get things done.
Step Five: Organize the List.
It’s not sufficient to spit out a bunch of random tasks on paper. Without organizing and prioritizing, you wouldn’t know where to start. So in this step 5, shuffle the items around, think of the priorities and bring MVTs (Most Valuable Tasks) up on top.
Step Six: Take action. Do something.
Now that we have a goal, a timeline, a list which is organised, we sort of, have a plan. The next obvious step is to start working on it. Do not sit tight and meditate on it. It’s time for action. Take the first step immediately.
Step Seven: Do something Everyday on your Most Important Goal.
With all the six steps over now, we are remaining with one final instruction — consistency. Without being consistent, nothing ever gets completed. So, never lose sight of your goal, and daily — absolutely daily, do something that pushes you closer and closer towards your goal.
And lastly, remember, “Success is not money or style, but the progressive realization of your own goals.” — Jim Ron
