What is Success?

Quite a question, isn’t it?

What could success mean?

What does it mean to be successful?

It is one of the questions that have eluded us and confused us for time immemorial. It is one of those questions where the answer lies more in the subjective realms of life and not objective.

Let us read the following questions:

Does success mean anything?

Is it not the same as happiness?

What would it take to call someone successful?

Are we talking about the folks with ample wealth and fame?

Let’s ponder over this question of the day for a bit today. How about reading some definitions provided by giants (those we know as respectful and successful.)

Here we go:

Success cannot be defined in one sentence but is comprised of many things. The definition depends on the individual, and there is no one-size-fits-all.  — Zig Ziglar

Success is about the difference between people’s lives. — Barack Obama

If you carefully consider what you want to be said of you in the funeral experience, you will find your definition of success. — Stephen Covey

I measure success by how many people love me. — Warren Buffet

Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and likely how you do it. — Maya Angelou

Success is 1% inspiration, 99% perspiration. — Thomas Edison

Success is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm. — Winston Churchill

Success is the progressive realization of a worthy goal. – Jim Rohn

Success is getting what you want; happiness is wanting what you get. — Dale Carnegie

Just your success by what you had to give up to get it. — Dalai Lama XIV

Wow! Listed above are definitions of success by some very accomplished people. All of these folks were successful and achieved a lot within their means. The last part here is essential. Success is subjective.

As notable success and sales coach Zig Ziglar mentioned, “There is no one-size-fits-all.” But when you read closely, you would notice that a lot of them talk about hard work, toiling to achieve your goals, accepting and liking your like and everything inside it, not giving up on failures, earning fame and respect, and also what you had to give up to achieve your dreams. That’s right; all of this adds up to your success.

There is no one correct definition of success. Your definition is—buried deep inside you—shake and wake to bring it out.

Stephen Covey’s definition hints about looking for our version of success—which, for you, my friend—will be different from the rest of us. You are unique and wonderful in your sweet way.

Here are some tips that’ll guide you along this holy search for this ephemeral word known as “success”—and making it possible.

Ask the following questions:

  • What makes me happy?
  • What are my goals?
  • In doing what, I completely forget time and space and find myself buried in a flow state?
  • What is important to me?
  • What are my values?
  • Do I value my life? What is it that I value about life?
  • Do I want to be successful?
  • What, once achieved, will make me happy and deeply satisfied and leave me with a sense of completeness?

By pondering these questions, you will be able to find your piece of peace—your definition of success. Or, you will get closer to it in the process.

Now, look for a good time, set a DND alarm for an hour or two, and sit down someplace comfortable. Pick up your favorite pen, grab a notebook and start thinking on paper. Write and doodle your version of answers to these questions, and in this process, my friend, you will get deep satisfaction.

Good luck being successful. And as the great success coach, Zig Ziglar says: “See you at the top!”
