Holi is one of the most popular festivals which celebrates the eternal and divine love of god Radhe Krishna. The day also signifies the victory of good over evil which marks the triumph of Lord Vishu as Narasimha over Hiranyakashipu.
Hiranyakashipu had gained a boon from Bramha due to which he could not be killed during the day or night, inside or outside the house; neither in the sky nor on land nor in heaven or Hell, by any weapon, nor by a man, god, asura, or an animal. Endowed with this boon, he felt he was immortal, and he started tormenting all the devotees of Vishnu, including his son, Prahlad. To protect the devotee, Lord Vishnu, creatively carried a hybrid scary form (Lord Narasimha) that was part man part animal, and slayed the wicked king at the junction of day and night, at the threshold of his house, which was neither inside nor the outside, upon his lap, and with his claws.
Holika (sister of Hiranyakashipu), who had the boon to remain unscathed in fire, took Prahlad in her lap and sat in the fire. Lord Vishnu came to Prahlad’s aid and as a result, Holika burnt while Prahlad remained unharmed. Holika Dahan celebrates the death of Holika and the salvation of Bhakt Prahlada.
The universe is at its most energized during Holi. Holi is timed to correspond with the lunar and solar cycles. It is observed on two days; the first celebrates the lighting of a bonfire in honor of Holika, the sister of demon king Hiranyakashipu, and the second commemorates the triumph of good over evil through the use of colors and water. It is considered auspicious to form a complete circle around the Holika fire with your family members. Generally, commodities such as grains, peas, wheat, and linseed are offered to the fire. It is thought that by doing Holika Puja on this auspicious day, all forms of negativity and fear may be overcome. Holika Puja bestows strength, prosperity, and fortune.
